I have had a passion for performance dog sports since 1973 when I first started training dogs. I started training through 4-H, and then began working at a show kennel in 1977. The owner of the kennel gave me the opportunity to show a lovely Bernese Mountain Dog in AKC breed, junior showmanship, and obedience. In 1979 we were High in Trial out of the Novice A obedience class at the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America National Specialty when I was 15. I have successfully competed in breed, obedience, rally, and agility and have had nationally ranked Australian Shepherds in obedience, rally, and agility. I have placed seven breed championships on my dogs and major pointed many others. I have also placed an agility championship on my Australian Shepherd as well as advanced titled them in obedience and rally. My Irish Setter has also been nationally ranked in agility.
I love the bond that is established when a strong training relationship is formed between dog and handler. I am a strong advocate of positive training methods and having fun in training and enjoying the ring experience. I believe that a process goal focus is the most effective way to build a solid foundation when teaching our dogs. Too often steps are skipped which weakens the desired result. This is reflected in the ring when there is pressure to perform. I work on breaking each exercise down in training to maintain a process focus which allows for a more present focus instead of an outcome focus. This leads to successful performance outcomes and a clearer understanding for our dogs.
